Conductor Search

The Thornton Community Band (TCB) established in 2008, a 501(c)(3) organization of 75+ community musicians, located in the North Denver Metro, Thornton area, is seeking qualified candidates to fill the role of Principal Conductor starting in September of 2025!

The Principal Conductor is responsible for selecting music, conducting the band, and developing the overall musical quality of the group.

  • Application Process:
    • Finalists for the position will be selected and notified by November 30, 2024, with the expectation that they will each conduct an audition piece of their choosing from the TCB music library at the TCB Winter Concert on March 9, 2025.
    • The final decision for Principal Conductor will be announced prior to the Spring concert, May 3, 2025.
    • Applicants are encouraged to visit the band at rehearsals to see the band in action during application process. (Please contact the band beforehand to set up a visit!)
    • The position will officially start on September 1, 2025 as an annual renewable contract.
    • Financial compensation will be $500-750 per month depending on experience.
  • Time Commitment:
    • Rehearsals take place weekly at McAllister Park Center, Thornton, Colorado, on Thursdays from 7 to 9 PM, starting early September through July 4th or as needed outside of the established rehearsal time.
    • The band performs four major concerts per year, with additional minor (but just as fun and important) concerts spread throughout.
    • The time commitment for each concert is approximately 3.5 hours, usually on a Saturday evening.
    • Requested to also attend monthly band board meetings.
  • Qualifications for Position:
    • Formal education in, and experience with, instrumental music and conducting.
    • Strong leadership and musicality qualities.
    • Ability to promote a positive band atmosphere that facilitates musical growth and enrichment of the band experience.
    • Comfortable giving clear, concise, and positive direction to band members of all ages and experience levels.
    • Strong familiarity with band literature that will entertain, educate, and grow the band and audience.
    • Works well with assistant and guest conductors, Board of Directors, and band members.
    • Accountability on following through board expectations with what is expected of the position.
    • Excellent time management skills.
    • Weekly time commitment.
    • A sense of humor and willingness to have fun!
